Privacy policy
What we collect, why we collect it, and what you can ask of us.
What this notice covers
This notice covers the information handled through this website: the messages you send us, the email list you can join, and the ordinary technical information a website collects.
Fine Jewellery By Colette is a store in Toronto. Canada's federal private-sector privacy law, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, applies to our commercial handling of personal information.
How you reach us through this website
The website is a catalogue and a way to reach us. It shows what is in the store, and where an item interests you it gives you an enquiry form rather than a price and a purchase button. Enquiries and appointment requests reach us as email.
Our online store runs on Shopify. Where a Shopify checkout is used, card details are entered on Shopify's own checkout pages and are handled by Shopify and its payment providers, under their terms, not by us.
What you send us
When you send an enquiry or request an appointment, the form collects your name, your email address, your telephone number, what your message is about, any item or reference you give us, the days and times that suit you, and your message.
The text of these forms goes through Shopify's own contact forms. It arrives as an email to info@finejewellerybycolette.com, with your address as the reply address. Photographs do not travel in that email. They go to our private storage, and the email carries links to them. Shopify checks message content for spam before delivering it.
You may attach up to five photographs of an item to an enquiry or an appointment request. This is optional. Please send photographs of jewellery and gemstones only, and avoid photographs that show other people.
When you attach a photograph, the website sends it to private storage that we control, as soon as you choose it and before you press the button to send the form. Each photograph is given a random reference. The email we receive contains a link to it, and only our staff use that link. We also record the internet address of your device for a short time, to limit misuse of the upload.
Shopify adds an hCaptcha check to these forms, to tell a person from an automated script. hCaptcha is run by a separate company, and it receives information about your browser and about how you interact with the check.
Our email list
We use Klaviyo to manage our email list. When you sign up, the website sends your email address to Klaviyo. If your browser is not running the page's script, the form submits your address to Shopify instead.
Klaviyo and our Shopify store are connected. A subscriber profile and its email subscription status pass between them, and information about activity in our online store can pass to Klaviyo as well.
We send our marketing email to people who have subscribed. We may also write once to clients, and to people who have recently asked us about jewellery, to invite them to subscribe, where Canadian law allows it. Every marketing email carries an unsubscribe link. You may also write to us to ask us to stop sending marketing email. Unsubscribing stops marketing email. It does not necessarily delete the subscriber profile or the record of your consent.
Subscribing is separate from everything else. Sending us an enquiry or requesting an appointment does not add you to the list.
What your own browser stores
When you start an enquiry or appointment form, your browser keeps a draft in temporary session storage so that you can move between pages without losing what you have entered. The website clears that draft after Shopify confirms that your message was sent. A draft is not sent to us until you submit the form.
When you save an item with the heart, your browser keeps your saved list on this device. It stays there until you remove the items or clear the website's browsing data. The website also uses temporary storage to return you to the same place in a list.
If your cookie settings allow personalisation, the website uses browser storage to remember up to eight items viewed in the past 30 days and to vary the sold items it shows you. Turning off personalisation clears this optional history. Some stored records can remain on your device until the website next updates them or you clear the website's browsing data.
If your cookie settings allow analytics and marketing, the website keeps campaign labels from the link you followed for the current browser session. If you send an enquiry or appointment request during that session, those labels are included with your message so that we can understand which communication led to it. Without those permissions, the campaign fields are left empty.
Clearing the website's browsing data removes these saved details from this device.
Cookies and measurement
Shopify uses cookies and similar technologies to operate and protect this website and to remember your privacy choices. It also uses optional technologies for analytics and marketing. Our Shopify integration with Klaviyo can process website activity for measurement and marketing. Email subscription is a separate choice made through the Subscribe form.
Where consent is required, optional cookies and browser storage wait for your choice. You can accept or decline optional uses and change your choice later using Cookie settings in the footer. Declining does not stop you browsing, saving an item, or sending an enquiry or appointment request.
You can also block or delete cookies in your browser. Blocking necessary cookies may prevent some website features from working. Shopify's cookie information explains its technologies and their purposes.
Others who receive information
- Shopify runs the website, stores its content, serves its pages, delivers the contact-form email, and provides its own measurement. Where a Shopify checkout is used, Shopify and its payment providers handle it.
- hCaptcha runs the check on the contact forms.
- Klaviyo runs our email list and receives the information described above.
- Supabase provides the private storage that holds photographs you attach to a form, and the service that receives them. The storage is located in Canada.
- Google provides the map on our Visit page. Your browser loads the map from Google.
- Adobe Fonts and Fontstand supply the typefaces. Your browser requests the font files from them.
Each of these companies handles information under its own terms. They may hold and process it on systems outside Canada, where the courts and authorities of that country may be able to require access to it under that country's law.
We do not sell personal information.
How long things are kept
Your enquiry stays in our email in the ordinary way, so that we can answer you and keep a record of any work we did. Our service providers keep what they hold under their own terms, and some records must be kept for as long as the law requires.
Photographs you attach to a form are deleted from our private storage 90 days after you send them. If we begin work with you, we may keep copies of your photographs in our job record for as long as we keep that record. You may ask us to delete a photograph sooner.
What you can ask of us
You can ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to stop sending you email, and ask us to delete information we no longer need to keep.
Write to info@finejewellerybycolette.com or call 416 787 9302. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you may raise it with the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
